2014 Yelland and Papps 'Second Take' Roussanne

Grapes for this wine were all hand picked and sourced from three vineyards in Western Barossa, Greenock and Dorien. 18% of the grapes spent 15 days fermenting on skins, while the rest were fermented in french oak. The wine  spent 9 months in barrels with occasional lees stirring lending to the great texture and aromatic complexity of this wine.

Pours cloudy and smells unlike any Roussanne I've come across. I get poached pear, apple cider, and lemon curd aromas alongside some more savory yeasty elements. A great textural palate with some spicy notes and more pear like fruit. I really enjoyed this. Equal parts interesting and slurpable.

As an aside their cellar door is great. A beautiful, comfortable spot to taste wines and relax. A must visit next time I return to the Barossa. I will leave more time to hang around there, play yard sports and have some food alongside their excellent wines.

2014 Yelland and Papps 'Second Take' Grenache

An interesting contrast to their Devote range Grenache, the Second Take is a fruity, lively, fun wine that is great for drinking young. Fermented naturally with 48% whole bunches before being aged in old and new oak for seven months, it was then bottled unfined and unfiltered. 

A sweet cherry/raspberry aroma jumps out of the glass and is followed by hints of chocolate and spice. In contrast to the sweet berry aromas the palate is refreshing and delicate, with a lively kick. This is a great bottle to buy and drink right away. An excellent wine marrying new and old wine making techniques to produce a faultless, fun, and interesting drop.

2012 Yelland and Papps 'Devote' Old Vine Grenache


Yelland & Papps Devote Old Vine Grenache 2012

Made from fruit sourced from 45 year old vines at the Materne Family Vineyard in the Barossa Valley, this wine was open fermented for two weeks before being basket pressed and aged in old and new french oak for 20 months.

Wafts of cherry and other red berry fruits meld with aromas of black pepper, spice, and licorice. Soft fine tannins flow effortlessly across the palate. A well balanced wine with clean acidity and fine structure. Drinking well now, but will likely improve over the next few years.

2013 Yelland and Papps Sete Di Vino

Yelland and Papps are not your average Barossan wine producers. Unlike many wine makers in the region, Susan Yelland and Michael Papps are a young family of first generation wine makers. They source many of their grapes from vineyards around the region and have a small vineyard of their own. Most importantly they are making really great and unique wines.

Sete di Vino translates from Italian into "thirst for wine", a sentiment I can relate to. This blend of Barbera, Lagrein, and Dolcetto is a perfect everyday drinking wine, that is great with food. Some savory elements on the nose meld well with flowery aromas and good fresh dark berry flavors. A bit of sour cherry, soft tannins, and a nice oak finish.

This wine is drinking great right from the start, so no need to cellar. Paired fantastic with pizza and cured meats, and would likely do well alongside plenty of other dishes. I'll be buying this again.
