1998 Yalumba ' The Menzies' Cabernet Sauvignon

Named after politician and wine enthusiast Sit Robert Menzie, the grapes for this wine all come from the Menzies vineyard in Coonawarra.

Initial cigar box and black pepper aromas opened up in the decanter to reveal more dark berry fruit and developed well over about an hour. Didn't detect any of the eucalypt like aromas, common in wines from Coonawarra.  The tannins have aged gracefully and the acidity is still in tact and well balanced, resulting in excellent structure and length. This wine has developed well and likely still has a few good years ahead of it.

2010 Wynns 'Black Label' Cabernet Sauvignon

As many Australian wine fans are well aware the Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the best value wines from the Coonawarra region, and generally ages quite well. While it's certainly one to buy up and cellar, I've notice a few times I've been able to buy this wine with a few years already on it for very little mark up. An attractive proposition to someone like myself with a fairly small wine fridge.

This 2010 is coming along nicely. Chocolate, earth, and mint, line up well with the dark berry and plum aromas. Maybe a hint of cigar box developing. Still plenty of life left in the tannins of this wine, but they're becoming quite silky and very enjoyable. Look forward to seeing this wine again in another few years.

2012 Vinomofo Old Money Cabernet Sauvignon

This is probably my pick of most recent batch of collaborations between wine retailers Vinomofo and wine makers around the country. This Cabernet was made by Sam Brand, a fourth generation winemaker in the Coonawarra region, from fruit sourced from his family vineyards.

A very approachable Cabernet in it's youth with a nose delivering plenty of dark berry fruit and a hint of mint, characteristic of the region. Super soft tannins and good fruit character make this easy drinking, smooth, and very ready to drink now.

Not one for the cellar, but a very good wine to share with friends over food.

2009 Wynns Coonawarra Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon

You can't think about Australia's Coonawarra region without thinking about Cabernet Sauvignon, and this is an excellent example of why that is, from an iconic producer in the region.

One of the great things about Wynns black label Cabernet is that it is fairly easy to track down.  I was able to find both this 2009 and a 2010 at a major retailer and noted the 2012 was also available.

Great nose with dark vibrant fruits, a hint of tobacco, and that classic hit of mint, so distinctive of Coonawarra Cabernet.  Full bodied with decent length on the palette and hints of blackberry. Great structure and almost velvety tannins. A fantastic Cabernet for this price, I would buy it again. It drank wonderfully with grilled lamb loin chops.  Likely to have quite a few years left in it, so if I see it again I'll get one for the wine fridge.
